Pie Filling In The Bleak Mid Winter
Blueberry and Blackberry Pie Fillings |
Today my thoughts turn to summertime. Here in Tennessee, the weather is dreary, all rain and gray skies. I am thinking about all those blueberries sitting in my freezer just waiting for someone (me) to whip up something delicious and tummy-warming, like a big blueberry pie.

Reference Library: Make Your Own Groceries
Make Your Own Groceries was the first book that I had found that advocated scratch cooking to replace convenience foods that can be purchased at the store. Needless to say that my stockpile of these types of books has now amassed into well, a great pile. I love these types of books. Who knows what little gems lay within the pages, encouraging me to make my own instead of spending a hard-earned coin for something so full of additives and preservatives that it's barely recognizable if the ingredients are read. That's right folks, I am always looking for a "Make it, Don't buy it" project and this book is the source from which that springs.Long before there was a Pinterest.com, there was "Make Your Own Groceries" by author Daphne Metaxas Hartwig. There is also a companion book, "More Make Your Own Groceries" by the same author. Both books offer many types of recipes that allow you to create convenience items for your family, even baby food and pet products.
I know it may seem as though I have only positive things to say whenever I do a book review, but I have come to realize that I prefer to review books that I really like and enjoy. I don't waste a lot of time on bad books. And though the cover of this one may look a bit dated and overly simplistic,

What Are Your Survival Skill Sets?
This is my Parlor Wheel that I am learning to spin on. |
It all started back in the 18th century, that is to say when I worked at a fort as a historic interpreter. I wanted to learn how to spin wool, and there were several spinning wheels, but when I asked to be taught, all I got was a brief lesson on a drop spindle. Not what I had in mind, I assure you. Though I didn't learn to spin, I learned so much more. At the fort, I learned that electricity isn't a necessity. I learned to cook on a fireplace hearth, to hand sew clothing, to build a

Reference Library: The Tightwad Gazette
To those of you who have already discovered "The Complete Tightwad Gazette", I am preaching to the choir when I say that this book has been a religion an inspiration to my tightwad soul for years and years. I was a newsletter subscriber back in the day, and I lamented not having a complete set of The Tightwad Gazette Newsletter at hand. As far as I can tell, all the issues are compiled in this one book, affectionately known at my house as "Big Blue". (I read somewhere that this may not be the case, that some content from the newsletters is missing.)
From this one book, I have found recipes for many low-cost dishes and practical advice about saving money by simply not spending. I know that sounds weird, but if I can make something from an item I would have normally

Savoring Summer Time and Lemonade
Lemonade 5cents! LOL! |
Years ago, I brought this lemonade to a family picnic and my brother-in-law declared it to be the best lemonade he had ever tasted. I don't know about that, but it is pretty good. I got the recipe from Better Homes and Gardens, so you know it's not some secret concoction that I whipped up from imagination. All in all, I do think it tastes fairly balanced, just the right amount of sweet to tart. My

The Suburban Homestead- Bloom Where You Are Planted
I've been experimenting with my yard over the Summer, and what I have discovered is that vegetables don't grow well in the shade. I have been growing peppers and squash and so far I have a few of each. It's the saddest garden I have ever seen.
Will I try again next year? Yes. I have already been combing through seed catalogs and making plans. (I am stubborn that way.) Will my garden be better next year? I think so. I have been watching the sun as it travels across our small patch of land and feel as if I could have and should have done a few things differently. For one, I should have gotten an earlier start and planted seeds. I bought plants mid-way through the season. They weren't cheap and they didn't have enough time to fully reach their potential. I will be starting earlier next Spring and I will be planting actual seeds. I have been dreaming of barrels planted with potatoes, and tubs filled with
